Mushroom grow kit producer in the Netherlands since 2009
Mondo Europe B.V. is a mushroom grow kit producer in the Netherlands that has made its products in-house in Purmerend since 2009. The same production supplies three channels: the consumer webshop Mondo Growkits, Mondo Microdosing and Mondo Mycologicals, which serves shops, webshops, distributors and brands across Europe.
Who makes the products you buy from Mondo Mycologicals?
The products are made by Mondo itself, at its own site in Purmerend, not bought in from a third party and relabelled. For a reseller that means one point of contact for questions about strains, handling and availability, and a producer that also sells to end customers and hears the same questions your customers ask.
Mondo’s consumer brands serve more than 30,000 end customers and hold a 4.5 out of 5 rating on Trustpilot. That is the same production you buy from as a business partner.
How is a mushroom grow kit produced?
A grow kit is a container of substrate that has been sterilised, inoculated and fully colonised by mycelium before it leaves the producer. The steps below describe how that process works in general; the exact methods, equipment and timings differ between producers.
1
Substrate preparation. A nutrient base, typically grain and/or a bulk substrate, is mixed and hydrated to the right moisture level.
2
Sterilisation. The filled bags or containers are sterilised under heat and pressure, so that no bacteria or mould spores survive to compete with the mycelium.
3
Cooling. The substrate cools down in a clean environment before it can be inoculated; mycelium does not survive hot substrate.
4
Inoculation in clean conditions. Mycelium from a selected culture is introduced into the substrate under clean-air conditions, because this is the moment contamination is most likely to get in.
5
Colonisation. The containers rest at a controlled temperature while the mycelium grows through the whole substrate.
6
Checks before dispatch. Colonised kits are inspected for even, white growth and signs of contamination before they are packed. In a sound process, a kit that fails this check is discarded rather than shipped.
7
Packing and shipping. Finished kits are packed and shipped to the customer, who only has to provide fruiting conditions.
How do grow bags and truffles differ in production?
All-in-one ready-to-grow bags follow the same chain as grow kits: sterile substrate, clean inoculation, full colonisation, inspection. The difference is the format. The customer receives a bag instead of a box and often handles more of the fruiting setup.
Magic truffles come from a different process. Truffles are sclerotia, compact masses of mycelium that certain Psilocybe species form inside their substrate. They are grown in sterilised containers over a longer period than a grow kit, then harvested, cleaned, sorted and packed fresh. Because they are a fresh product, they are kept cool after harvest and through shipping. The species in grow kits, Psilocybe cubensis, does not form truffles, so truffles come from other species and cultivated lines.

Why does in-house production matter to a reseller?
In-house production matters because the party that answers your questions is the party that made the product. If a batch behaves differently or a customer reports a problem, you talk to the producer directly instead of passing a complaint along a chain of traders.
It also means the strain list on the grow kit page, from Golden Teacher and McKennaii to B+ and PES Hawaii, refers to the production you actually buy from, not to whichever trader had stock that month. Product texts you write once stay accurate for longer.
Ask for what you need to sell, not for a brochure
When you apply, list the questions your own customers ask: strain characteristics, storage, what to do when a kit is slow. Answers to those help you more than a general company profile.
What should you ask any producer before you buy?
This page describes how production works. It does not list equipment, certificates or test results. If those matter for your market or your own customers, ask for them directly when you apply as a partner. The same questions are worth asking any supplier:
☐ Is the product made in-house or bought in?
☐ Which checks happen before a product is shipped?
☐ What storage guidance comes with perishable products?
☐ What happens if a product arrives damaged or contaminated?
☐ Which documents can the producer share for your market?
Mondo’s legal notice applies to the whole range: products are sold for mycological research, educational, horticultural or souvenir purposes to buyers aged 18 and over, and buyers outside the Netherlands check their local law. See legal status in Europe.
